Volunteering Opportunities From: Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan

Volunteer with Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (CCSEM) and Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) to help build 50 beds for children in need.

CCSEM serves as the charitable arm of the Archdiocese of Detroit, while SHP is a volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to ending childhood bedlessness. Each bed is handcrafted by volunteers who generously donate their time and talents to support children in their communities. These efforts are made possible by the generous donations of many.

Join us in this powerful act of mercy and service, helping ensure that no child sleeps on the floor.

Volunteer jobs include cutting, sanding, drilling, assembling, staining, and branding.

- Volunteers will need to be able to stand for a long period of time.

- Water and refreshments will be provided.

Build Location: Outside in the Center for the Works of Mercy parking lot. 10301 Woodward Ave., Detroit.

Parking: across the street at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 9844 Woodward Avenue

Please arrive about 10 minutes early to allow time for parking.

Please bring:

-Closed Toe Shoes

-Comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting dirty

-No tools are need!

Join us at Catholic Charities Center for the Works of Mercy, where you can make a meaningful impact in the Detroit community by embodying the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.

Volunteers focus on behind-the-scenes efforts such as sorting and folding clothing, unloading deliveries, organizing inventory, and packing food boxes for distribution.

- Sorting and Folding Clothing/ Unloading Deliveries/Organizing Inventory: Center for the Works of Mercy is blessed to receive donations, and need help unloading vehicles that, and sort through items afterwards. Items may be clothing or food. Volunteers are needed to go through items to sort through what is good, and what cannot be given away (food may be expired, clothing may have holes, etc...). Then, these items need to be placed with items similar, such as the type of food, or the size or type of clothing.

- Packing Food Boxes: To help get clients in and out quickly, we need volunteers to pack boxes of non-perishable food. This ensures no one ever leaves empty-handed.

If you are signed for the morning shift and would like to stay longer, please let a staff member know. We are happy to accommodate!

Center for the Works of Mercy accommodates large volunteer groups. We do ask that you contact David Megyesi at megyesidj@ccsem.org at least 7 days before the day your group would like to volunteer.

- Volunteering these shifts have minimum contact with clients

For this shift, you will work in either the food pantry, or in the clothing closet. 

- Food Pantry: Clients come with appointments, and volunteers will shop with the clients, providing company and instructions (if needed). Each client will be given a shop cart, and guide to how many items to grab from each selection of food and hygiene products. At the end of the appointment, volunteers may need to bag, or box up, and weigh the items for the client.

- The Clothing Closet: Clients come with appointments and volunteers are needed to shop with the clients as they chose clothing. Volunteers will also chart was given away during their shifts. At the end of the end appointment, Volunteers bag up any items the clients decided to take. If the Clothing Closet is running low on an item, the volunteers will collect more clothing from the storage area and place them in their respective spots in the Clothing Closet.

Produce Distribution is located at the Center for the Works of Mercy. Volunteers will help distribute food boxes for clients in the parking lot* at Center for the Works of Mercy. Boxes weight less than 10 pounds. 

*Box distribution will be located inside if it is cold.
